Dr. John C. Baldwin to Advise Medical Device Innovator on expanded business opportunities
PORTSMOUTH, NH, November 27, 2007 - Fluidnet Corporation, an emerging innovator of intravenous (IV) infusion therapy devices, announced the appointment of Dr. John Charles Baldwin to serve on its Board of Medical Directors. As Medical Director, Dr Baldwin will specifically guide Fluidnet in the business development effort and use of its products in emerging and underserved areas around the world.
Dr. Baldwin has extensive expertise in the biotechnology, bioengineering, pharmaceutical, and medical device industries and has served as a corporate director for numerous publicly held companies. Instrumental in launching several pharmaceutical and medical device companies including Alexion Pharmaceuticals and Novacor (acquired by Baxter), Dr. Baldwin has widespread experience working with the FDA, the NIH (National Institute of Health), and clinical payors such as Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies.
Dr. Baldwin's expertise and insight will be a great benefit in helping to define the next generation of our revolutionary infusion therapy products,
said Jeff Carlisle, Fluidnet CEO. We look forward to leveraging his industry leadership and first-hand knowledge of patient, provider, and institutional needs in our continued efforts to evolve infusion therapy.
Fluidnet is designing the healthcare industry's first fully portable, highly simplified, load and go, self-contained infusion device. The device will utilize a closed-loop control system utilizing novel real-time optical flow and volume sensing technologies that allow fluids to be continuously and accurately delivered in ways that specifically reduce clinical risks and complications to patients while also increasing nursing efficiencies.
In my experience, the patient's comfort, convenience, and independence are crucial elements of a successful recovery,
remarked Dr. Baldwin. Whether the patient has just undergone major transplant surgery or regularly requires intravenous medication, the Fluidnet IV device is more than groundbreaking; it is poised to significantly impact the quality of a patient's entire treatment experience.
Dr. Baldwin received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University, studied at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and received his M.D. from Stanford University. As a cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Baldwin has retained appointments at Stanford, Yale, Baylor College of Medicine, and several other leading institutions. A pioneer in surgical transplant technique, Dr. Baldwin performed the first successful human transplantation of lung tissue procured at long distance while at Stanford in 1986, and the first successful auto-transplant
of a human heart while at Baylor. He is widely published and serves on the editorial board of several medical journals. Dr. Baldwin has been cited for his work in the field of cardiothoracic surgery by the Woodward and White national survey of The Best Doctors in America
every year since its inception in 1992.
Dr. Baldwin is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Surgery, and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He joins Fluidnet's two current medical directors: Dr. Matthew Weinger, Director of Perioperative Research in Quality at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, who is focused on helping Fluidnet optimize its user interactions and study the clinical improvements of its infusion products; and Dr. Douglas M. Hansell, who is currently affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University, and is providing advice and counsel on process reforms for intravenous therapy.
