Hundreds of clinicians provided input to our development effort. They asked us:
- Can't we have something that is as simple to setup as gravity infusion?
- To find a way to get rid of those constant air-in-line alarms!
- To provide reliable battery operation, measured in days or weeks, not minutes?
- How to avoid transcribing lots of data into and out of the pump?
- To make the flow pattern gentle and completely continuous?
- For one device to satisfy all clinical situations, even in a code.
- How to make the product less costly, like we see in consumer electronics?
- To make the pump intuitive and safe without hours of training required.
- To find a solution to deliver the entire piggyback dose and avoid back priming
The result of this customer input evolved into a simple, low cost, yet highly portable and capable infusion pump. There are only three internal moving parts to the system. Fluid gently, continuously and accurately "leaks" to the patient with precise monitoring of the situation using state-of-the-art pneumatic and optically based technologies . Air from the container and IV are actively eliminated. The pump is silent and so efficient that it can operate off AC power for many days on fully charged batteries. It can be used in any orientation relative to the patient and offers a brilliant high resolution color touch screen user interface. Incorporating modern software design and electronics offers the kind of wireless information exchange you'd expect in today's connected world. Imagine a pump that can be tracked within a hospital or a nurse with a cell phone being able to check the status or reprogram a pump while connected to a patient in their home.
Imagine complex infusion protocols being automatically communicated to the pump directly from pharmacy and being presented onscreen to the operator for validation without any programming ?
